Let us understand the depth and grandeur of this prayer.
Sages have worked out 4 distinct categories. Any pursuit that you work for is known in Sanskrit as purusharth. A human being that which he longs for, that which he pursues.
4 categories are: Dharma, Artha Kamha and Moksha.
Dharma: Dharmo rakshiti, rakshitaha – one who protects Dharma is protected by dharma. Dharma – Pursuits of higher values a way of appropriate living over a period of time.
Artha is money, security, health.
Kamha is a desire I want to fulfil my desires by wealth I generate
Moksha is freedom. Freedom from anything that afflicts you. Higher values, straight forward, reaching out, not a selfish life. Your living doesn't hurt anyone. The least disturbance in life. The door to moksha is knowledge of Self, knowledge of truth Knowledge of Atma Vidhya. Knowledge alone is Moksha. Gift of moksha is given to us. We are moksha. We are limitless.
Supreme powers of Lord Shiva are invoked. Shiva means most auspicious.
यजामहे Means we worship, we invoke. I invoke Lord Shiva, Shiva is described in the first part as त्र्यम्बकं, next सुगन्धिं and पुष्टिवर्धनम्.
3 simple words in Sanskrit and how much knowledge is infused in 3 words.
पुष्टिवर्धनम् means literally means nourishment. I am invoking Shiva as a source of nourishment. The embodiment of nourishment and he will nourish me when I invoke him. What is the nourishment I need, Artha-money, security, health.
Kamaha: desire. I want to enjoy wealth.
पुष्टि is nourished me. Give me enough of securities, facilities, comfort so that I can invest my time, my thoughts for higher pursuits.
वर्धनम् one who helps nourishment grow so that I don’t lack in anything. Wealth and health. What is the use of wealth when health is not good? Give me a strong physical body, strong prana so that my physiological works well. May I earn and enjoy what I earn. May you bless me with nourishment.
The two pursuits Artha and Kamha health and wealth is covered in पुष्टिवर्धनम्
सुगन्धिं means the fragrance. One with a beautiful sweet fragrance. Fragrance refers to a fragrant character here it refers to a person who follows higher values, Dharma. A person who has respect for the laws of nature. A person who has heightened sensitivity not to abuse.
Fragrance her means every little aspect of living. Sensitivity is not marred, disturbed that’s the glory and fragrance, the character of a person.
I invoke Lord Shiva as सुगन्धिं I am asking for that depth of character, worthy character so that my personality shines due to the values I live for. I should never have pressure to cut dharma, violate dharma.
पुष्टिवर्धनम् Blesses me with Artha and Kamha
सुगन्धिं Blesses me with Dharma. I pray so that I stick to my dharma. I do what is ought to be done. This is the pursuit of Dharma.
त्र्यम्बकं - Ambaka means eyes. त्र्य means 3 eyes.
Lord Shiva is called one with 3 eyes. 2 physical eyes and one eye of the forehead. Symbolic and purpose of 3rd eye. It is called Gyan chakshu. Gyan is wisdom and chakshu is an eye. The wisdom that transforms your life. Give me that knowledge which will free from afflictions. Knowledge of Atma Vidhya is moksha.
त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे I am praying for the capacity to study atma Vidhya i.e. knowledge of myself. Lord Shiva who will grant me blessings of this knowledge.
3 words take care of human being pursuits
पुष्टिवर्धनम्: Artha and Kamha
All that I long for I have asked for
3rd and 4th line is a masterpiece.
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् means it is like Indian cucumber is stuck to the creeper and does not get displaced, it gets ripened where it is. Similarly like the vegetable you please free me from मृत्यो - does not mean death. It means change. The affliction born of change. Every time there is some change human being gets worried. What will happen to me? Good for me, safe or not, मृत्यो is the affliction the change brings. Change in life is a must. Things keep on changing. Change is not a problem. The problem is I am afraid of the change because I don’t know what I have to face. Fear of the unknown, Face the fear of change.
The grandeur of the prayer is saying, let let me ripen like the cucumber, may my personality ripen, may my character grow to such a level that I can gain knowledge and gain moksha. But to gain moksha I am not displaced from where I am and what I am doing.
I am where I am but the knowledge frees me like the vegetable is where it is but it is freed from the creeper. For moksha, you need not go anywhere like the Himalayas or in caves. Knowledge here and now. May I not be displaced from where I am and what I am doing.
May I be free from all the affliction मृत्यो, the change brings. Freedom from the affliction of change is equal to moksha while living. It is freedom from anything that bothers you, afflicts you. Who doesn't want freedom from inauspiciousness, afflictions, pain? We don’t know how to pursue it.
To get freedom from pain, afflictions people take temporary measures by getting engrossed in workaholic, alcoholic or shopaholic. People are getting drowned in temporary measures.
Last part is most powerful. It says मामामृतात्त् means I should never forget my amrut, means fact that I am immortal. Word a-mrutam - मृत is death. Amrutha is that which never dies. Is the truth of myself. My body is subject to death. I, in essence, is immortal.
The truth is I am limitless, I am immortal but I just don’t know it.
So the prayer is so brilliant it says मा means never should I forget my immortality. I should never forget the purpose I was born for.
I can transact in limited in the limited world but may I not forget my real nature is infinite. That is my real identity.
Seek the higher and lower will be added to you..
The prayer covers everything that you ever wish and want. A complete prayer, a complete mantra.
