One Day Case Study Competition on Operational Excellence

Vedzen is the best lean consultancy for lean construction in pune(Genba (also romanized as gemba) is a Japanese term meaning "the real place.")

Lean Kaizen Mela Gemba Owners is the starting point of a journey, especially for the front-line members of the industrial society to share and learn the Best practices of Operational Excellence of

world class manufacturing

.

Gemba is a Japanese word for the Work-place. In Industrial terminology Gemba Owner refers to the people who work on the shop floor. The theme for this year, the second edition of the Mela was "Lead from the front and Stay Ahead". The event endorsed the usage of Vernacular Language - Hindi and Marathi encouraging the participants to come forward and communicate freely.

Taking the tradition ahead DCCIA Pune collaborated with Vedzen Institute for the 11th year in organizing the event.  The Mela was held at Suzlon Excellence Academy, Pune on 9th Jan 2015 with the participation of workers as well as management representatives from various industries who had come to compete and witness an exciting Case Study Competition. All participants received a folder that had a note on theme, profile of the speakers, and schedule for the day with instructions on conducting the Case Study presentation.

The event began with the lighting of the ceremonious lamp to awaken the wisdom within oneself. Mr Vishwas Fadtare & Mr Sanat Sankrityayan from Vedzen were the graceful hosts. They kick started the event by offering the honourable guests with a Sapling and invited them to take their seats on the dais.

The first speaker of the day, Shri Yogesh Vaghani, Chairman, Vedzen Institute commenced the day by welcoming all the participants and eminent guests. He began his speech with explaining the Change Model which is based on the basic principle that "you become whatever you think of yourself to be". He explained that learning happens by "making meaning" of life experiences. That the learning cycle begins with whatever most people perceive of them. So, derive the positive side from your life experiences and push for constructive change with everybody. Acknowledge the interdependence of all who are involved in or affected by your efforts.

Mr. Vaghani shared an interesting fact about Eagle, the king of birds that it can live up to 70 years. When the Eagle reaches its forties, its wings become heavy and the beak becomes blunt. Now it can neither soar high in the sky nor use its beak to hunt or eat its food. Therefore to survive for such a long period of time it undergoes a brutal makeover that lasts for 150 days. The Eagle flies off to a mountain top and knocks its beak plucking it out. It waits for the beak to grow back so that it can break its claws and pluck all the feathers. Finally with new feathers, the Eagle takes the flight of rebirth after 5 ruthless months and goes on to live for another 30 years. Concluding his speech, Mr Vaghani enthused the participants to use the Mela as a platform to transform their lives, to learn and to share the most.

Shri HP Srivastava, Vice Chairman DCCIA Pune & Head - HR & Commercial, Head - South Africa Operations, Oriental Rubber Industries Limited was the next guest to speak at the Mela. He began with sharing an interesting fact that this very day, on 9th January, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa to begin his journey in “the Indian Independence Movement". He asked the participants to take inspiration from Gandhiji's life and re-kindle their sprits to begin the New Year with fresh enthusiasm. It was also Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, named after the Father of the Nation.

Mr Srivastava also remembered Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the outgoing Indian Test Captain and said that we must adapt to develop his humility and cool attitude along with Hard Work. He felt delighted in saying that the seeds of the Mela were sown some ten years back with the vision of contributing back to the society.Today, he said, the seeds have grown into a tree called the Lean Kaizen Mela. Lastly he thanked all the participants for attending and wished them good-luck for the Case Study Competition.

Shri KB Gorane, Director Operations (India Region) at Alfa Laval India Ltd was the third speaker in the series. He address the audience in Marathi on the topic, the Role of Gemba Owners in Staying Ahead against the backdrop of Make in India Campaign and developing a skilled workforce ans

world class manufaturing in India

.Shri Arvind Navadikar, Director, Excellence Learning Center, the last speaker on the dais, spoke on the Role of Gemba Owners in World Class Manufacturing against the backdrop of Make in India Campaign.  He began with explaining the meaning of Gemba and how each one of us has a different Gemba. He said India as a Nation is already producing World Class Manufacturing organisations and it should be our prime responsibility to contribute towards making the Make in India campaign a huge success.

Hindi and Tamil language versions of Training Films on 5S: for Higher Productivity and Employee Motivation & Poka Yoke: a Strategy for Performance Excellence were launched by the eminent guests.
